What Are the Best Charities to Give To?

This seemingly straightforward question is one we hear often. While the intent behind the question is understandable, it rests on a flawed assumption—that there is an objective, universally applicable answer.

In reality, philanthropy is deeply personal, and no responsible advisor can create a universal list of “best” charities that fits every donor. Effective giving depends on your values, priorities, and goals—not just rankings or formulas.

The word “best” means different things to different people. For you, it may mean measurable impact per dollar. For another, it may mean supporting a hometown organization, advancing a faith-based mission, or helping a cause tied to personal experience. Some donors want to address urgent needs, while others care more about long-term solutions like research, advocacy, or systems reform. A generic list cannot capture these differences.

That is why philanthropic advising is less about handing out recommendations and more about guiding a thoughtful discovery process. Advisors begin by listening—learning about a donor’s life experiences, family history, interests, and hopes for the future. These conversations help uncover the values and causes that matter most and often lead donors to think more clearly about the legacy they hope to create through their giving.

From there, advisors help donors build a giving strategy. They consider whether you want to focus locally or globally, support direct services or long-term change, and how involved you want to be. This process narrows the field and makes it possible to evaluate organizations based on mission alignment, leadership, financial health, and effectiveness.

The real value of philanthropic advising is not identifying the “best” charity in the abstract. It is helping you make intentional, informed decisions that reflect who you are and what you care about. When you are matched with causes that truly resonate, giving becomes more meaningful, strategic, and lasting.
